My business model changed this year to only enter shows that award cash prizes. The gallery receives a commission if the piece sells. An artist can earn $100 for winning best of show. You may earn $50 if you place second. I figure in the cost of the gas to deliver the painting, attend the artist's reception, and go pick up any unsold work. So, for example, if I sell a $150 painting that I have worked 40 hours on, I basically earn $1.50 per hour that I worked on painting, not counting any travel time for purchasing goods and delivering the artwork.
